Year 1 WC 21st January 'Keeping Safe Week'

Date: 27th Jan 2019 @ 12:36pm

This week was our Keeping Safe Week. On Tuesday, Karen from the NSPCC came to talk to the children about their 'Speak out, Stay Safe' campaign. The assembly explained that all children have the right to speak out and be heard, to be safe and to get ehlp when they need it. The NSPCC will be delivering a parent workshop on Friday 1st February at 9am so please do come along.

In class we have looked at fire safety. Here are some of the safety tips we learnt:

- Don't play with matches or fire.

- If your clothes catch fire, then 'Stop, drop and roll'

- Never hide during a fire. In order to rescue you, firefighters need to be able to find you easily.

- Stay low.

- Get out and stay out. Never go back into a burning building.

- Know how to ring 999.

Mr Mottershead taught us what to do if we get lost. Children learn a few simple rules:

- Try to stay where you are so your parents can come and find you.

- It's useful to know your parents information, such as their real names and phone numbers.

- Statistically a mother with children is the safest person to ask for help, or ask a security guard/shop assistant.

- Never to go with anyone who offers to help you to find your parents. Always stay where you are.

The children also learnt to identify risks in the home and what they can do to reduce accidents.

In maths we have being continuing with addition. The strategy we have looked at this week is using number bonds to bridge 10.

e.g. 8 + 4 =

I know that 8 + 2 = 10, so we partition the 4 into 2 and 2. Therefore 8 + 2 = 10, then 10 + 2 = 12.

We've also been doing word problems and puzzles applying what we have learnt.

In English, the children have been writing their own portal stories using the structure of Jack and the Beanstalk. They had to create a character that found something that took them into another world. We had some very imaginative ideas such as being sucked into a story book, falling down a hole and landing on a desert island, or finding doors that led to another world.

In RE, we have explored the idea of making God's Kingdom grow as small things grow into something bigger, just like the Parable of the Mustard Seed. We looked at how we earned our Dojo points by showing Christian values, and this makes our school community grow. We sang 'Love is something if you give it away' and then replaced the word 'love' with different values. We wrote down something we have done to make God's Kingdom grow.
