Year 1 w/b 29th November

Date: 3rd Dec 2021 @ 7:44am

Our week started with us enjoying the snow at playtime. It was great to see the excitement as patterns were created in the snow and snowmen were constructed with Year 2.

A red hoopla found in the school grounds alerted us to the possibility that Beegu had returned to the playground over the weekend. Lost posters were made by the children describing Beegu’s personality and physical features alongside a picture of her. These have been put up around School so the rest of the school can also help us in our search. Next, we examined information texts about aliens like Beegu. We highlighted the different sections that described, for example, what Beegu looked like, what she ate and where she lived. Look out for the recording of us describing Beegu which we have posted on Showbie. Finally, today, after a shared write, we imitated writing the Beegu information text. We focused on sequencing our sentences for the different sections, using our phonics to help with spellings, using words common exception words from those displayed in the classroom and using capital letters for new sentences and names and full stops to show the end of a sentence.

In Power Maths we continued to work on subtraction and addition strategies when finding the difference between two numbers. We applied this learning to problem solving, for example, Jim has 5 pencils and Harry has 9 pencils. How many more pencils does Harry have? The class could count on from the smaller number or subtract from the larger number to find the difference and they were encouraged to use both strategies. We have reinforced using a number line as well as a tens frame to help children ‘see’ the numbers they are working with.

In our Design and Technology lesson this week we moved to the making stage with our hand puppets/comforters. We have added the details and features using felt, fabric and googly eyes. Next week we will use the joining techniques we previously explored to complete our projects ready to evaluate our designs.

In HeartSmart we focused on appreciating the ways in which we are all unique. We played a game where we were given two options and had to decide on our preferred or favourite option e.g., do you prefer summer or winter/sweets or chocolate. After completing the activity, we made the point that we are all different and we all have different preferences. No one will have exactly the same preferences as you. Even if we had the same choice as someone else for this particular game, if we played all day there would be a different answer at some point. Being HeartSmart is recognising that we are all unique. There is not, has not and will not ever be another one of you.

In gymnastics this week we combined skills that we have been working on this half term. Using the apparatus, we worked on our balancing, rolling, travelling and safe jumping skills to perform a sequence of movements with gymnastic skill and focus.

With the start of Advent, we thought about how we prepare both our homes and hearts for Christmas. It has been lovely to hear about all the different ways the class prepares for Christmas with their traditions at home. We also had the opportunity to think about advent as a time to look out into the community and at School we are doing just this with our Advent gifting. Thank you so much to all of you who have already contributed so generously to this food appeal.

This week at St Oswald’s it is Christingle Sunday and an opportunity to reflect on Jesus as the light of the world for Christians. You may also like to know that as part of Holmes Chapel Christmas Fair and markets on Sunday 5th December 4-7pm St Lukes Church in the centre of the town will be open serving refreshments and a knitted nativity trail will be available for the children to enjoy should you like to come along.

Have a lovely weekend and we really look forward to welcoming you to one of our four performances of ‘Prickly Hay’ next week. The children have been working hard and the Christian Christmas retelling of that first Christmas over 2000 years ago is delivered by Key Stage One with sparkle, enthusiasm, and enjoyment.
