Year 1 w/b 20th September

Date: 24th Sep 2021 @ 4:10pm

Our focus in English this week has been on extended writing. Having learned the text map letter from Major Glad, by heart, using actions to help sequence the chronology of events the children were secure about knowing what to write. We imitated writing the letter over 3 days having shared a guided write altogether on the carpet first. We teach the children to say it, write it and check it reinforcing capital letters for start of sentences and names and full stops to finish a sentence. We have been very encouraged by the children’s resilience to write largely independently and at length over a sustained period of time. Finally, towards the end of the week we innovated our text map changing the mischief maker, feelings in the letter (linked to our work on synonyms) and what the soldiers were dropped between or from. Today, we started to write our innovations and will continue to finish these next week.

In phonics we have reviewed ng and nk, writing words with these sounds in sentences and adding the suffixes -ing and -ed where appropriate. Monday’s spelling homework therefore will reflect this teaching and gives the children a further opportunity to embed their learning with you at home. Thank you again for your support encouraging your child to practise these at home and to use them in sentences with the high frequency words of the week.

Year 1 are enjoying their work in Power maths. This week we have moved on to counting backwards and recognising ‘one more’ as a number increasing and ‘one less’ as a number decreasing. The children have used all these skills to compare and order numbers to 10 and beyond, using concrete and pictorial representations to support their reasoning. If you would like to support your child at home with this work, you can give them numbers to add one more or less to and they could write these down as well in order to show their place value knowledge and digit formation.

In Collective worship, we have journeyed through the Bible a little further in the book of Genesis and Mrs McLean, ably supported by children from Year 2, shared the Story of Noah’s Ark with us through drama, song, and prayer. We reflected on the symbol of the rainbow as God’s promise to never to flood the world again. We are thankful for this promise and thankful for so much more in our lives including hospitals, schools, our family and friends, the good food we eat and God himself. We wrote some of our ideas on rainbows and used our thoughts to say a prayer of thanks.

Within RE, we reminded ourselves about our learning so far on ‘Good News’ – the good news I our own lives and stories we know from the Bible that are good news. In order to build up and enhance children’s knowledge of the bible the children explored 4 further good news stories from the Old Testament and 4 from the new before they focused on one in detail with their drawings and explanation about the good news. Revd Sandi shared with us on Tuesday the tower of Babel and the importance of firm foundations in our own lives underpinned by our school values.

Mr Simmon’s forest school last Tuesday was focused on mythical beasts and saw the children involved in several activities from making dragons with clay, creating potions, and using flint and steel to create sparks like dragon’s breath. Mr Simmons also talked to the children about fire safety and precautions.

In science, we identified and named a variety of common deciduous and evergreen trees in our school grounds. We looked for clues that would identify deciduous trees by noticing that their leaves were changing colour and that some of their leaves were dropping to the floor. We gathered evidence from deciduous trees and took photographs of evergreen trees. We created a class table of evergreen and deciduous trees. If you are out and about this weekend perhaps as a family, you could go on a tree hunt too and see if you can classify the trees you spot?

This week in PSHE, we looked at our feelings. In Year One we have already considered our feelings through our work with the ‘Colour Monster’ and enjoy sharing our feelings each morning using our pegs and Colour Monster display. This week we considered a range of feelings, when we would feel them and what those feelings look like; both through the expressions on our faces and how we present our bodies. We listened to a range of scenarios to guess the feeling and shared our own experiences of feeling each of these feelings.

During our first art and design lesson we looked at the changing patterns on display in our key text ‘Major Glad, Major Dizzy’. We could identify the different patterns on the walls and the curtains in the house where the story is set. We then considered all the patterns that are around us outside. This led us to create wax rubbings outside. These included bark rubbings, brick rubbings, leaf rubbings and other textures that the children found outside. Next week we will move on to the skill of printing to make patterns.

In History this week we have been thinking about what a decade is. We now know that a decade is a period of 10 years and cold show this on a timeline. We looked at toys from different decades and found it interesting to see that some toys that were popular in the past are still popular today. In our classroom we have a fantastic selection of books about toys from the past which we thoroughly enjoyed looking through this week.

After building on our animal dance with animal actions last week, this week we looked at ways to travel to the music. We considered how to move safely in a range of directions and how to incorporate different heights in our travel. We will work this into our dance next week.

Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to seeing everyone on Monday
