Our class text ‘The Night Pirates’ is providing fantastic inspiration in our writing. This week we have looked at a letter written by Tom to the Night Pirates. We have followed and learnt actions to memorise the letter following a text map. You can watch us perform the letter on Showbie under the class discussion section. After introducing the text, we looked in detail at the letter layout, features and the punctuation used throughout. We can’t wait to write our own letters over the next few weeks.

In Maths we have started a new unit ‘Numbers to 100’ and have focussed on counting to 100, exploring number patterns and partitioning numbers into tens and ones. All children are now fantastic at partitioning numbers and identifying numbers based on the number of tens and ones. A quick activity to reinforce this at home would be to try… ‘I’m thinking of a number, it has __ tens and __ ones. What is my number?

This week our Collective Worship reflecting on the ‘Miracles of Jesus’ focused on the healing of the paralysed man. We considered how the man himself may have felt to walk again but also the impact on his friends. His friends were determined and had faith in Jesus. We prayed for those we know and those people we do not know personally but have heard about in the news that need help, comfort and courage at this time.

In RE we reviewed our learning from last week by acting out the scenes from Joseph’s early life in Cannan- from when he was given the special coat from his Father, to his dreams about his brothers and his journey to Egypt as a slave. Next we heard about Joseph’s life in Egypt and its ups and downs in Potiphar’s house, from one moment being promoted in the household, to the next being imprisoned because of lies told about him. But whilst in prison Joseph interprets fellow prisoners dreams with the help of God looking after him. You will see some great photos attached and evidence of great acting skills.

In Forest school we reminded ourselves about the basis needs we would have if washed up on an island. We agreed these were warmth, shelter, food and drink. This week we focused on shelter and Mr Simmons shared with us 3 types of shelter already made in Forest school before we made 2 of our own in 2 teams. What a delight it was to watch the children working so cooperatively and eagerly on such a beautiful summer’s day. Please see the photos attached.

In PE we continue to develop our skills in athletics by developing our awareness of speed and distance over different distances and our spatial awareness and coordination with obstacles. We also have developed our awareness of height through jumping, taking off and landing safely.

From the photos below, you can see that our Science lesson took place outside this week and we looked at the features of plants and trees. We were given checklists of features to spot in our garden area before sharing our knowledge and labelling a dandelion that had been pulled up from the ground so we could also see the roots. We looked at the following vocabulary: leaf, flower, petal, fruit, berry, root, seed, trunk, branch, stem, bark and bud.

In History we have been learning about timelines and linked this to our Titanic unit of work. We worked out that as most of us are 6, the date the titanic sank was approximately 18 times our lifetimes ago. This put it into perspective as to how long ago this event happened. We looked at a timeline of our own lives e.g. when we were born, when we started school etc to make a personal reference to the purpose of a timeline before creating a timeline to show events that happened in April 1912 as HMS Titanic set sail across the Atlantic.

Finally, in HeartSmart we looked at the following learning objective: To keep trying when things are difficult. We linked this to persevering with things that are tricky and when learning to do something new, we often make mistakes and have to try again. We set ourselves challenges on the trim trail e.g. walking along the wobbly bridge without using our hands and worked hard and persevered to meet our challenges. We realised that by trying again, looking at the problem a different way and with the support of their friends, we demonstrated ‘No way Through’ isn’t True!
