Year 1 w/b 10th January

Date: 14th Jan 2022 @ 4:37pm

Week 2 in English has seen us exploring our key text ‘Hermelin’ in more detail, recognising the 5 parts to the story and using the language from the story in our own rehearsing of it. We have also been detectives by spotting and fixing poor punctuation in sentences, including capital letter for names of people and places, full stops and even commas. We practised making plurals by adding s and es and finally have started to write our own innovated version of Hermelin with Sid the detective snake!

In phonics we have focused on u-e (huge brute) and oo (poo at the zoo) and thank you for your continued support encouraging your children to practise spellings and sentences at home containing these taught sounds.

In Maths this week, we have been looking at 2D and 3D shapes, we know that 2D shapes make up 3D shapes. We looked at the faces of a cube and compared them with a cuboid. We also looked at how many faces Square-based pyramids, Cylinders and Cones have. To help us in our understanding of 3D shapes being made up of 2D shapes we printed the faces from 3D shapes. We were amazed that a rectangle and 2 circles mad a cylinder and that 4 rectangles and 2 squares were the 2D shape that when put together made a cuboid!

In Monday afternoons computing session we gave our friends directions. We used our knowledge from Geography last term to give instructions to move forwards, backwards, turn left and turn right to get from one side of the carpet to another. We know that in Computing, these instructions are called Algorithms. If our instructions were not quite right, we found out that there was a bug and that we needed to decompose our instructions to find that bug. We had lots of fun directing our friends and enjoyed making our own algorithms and checking to see if there were any bugs in them.

On Wednesday, we were very lucky because we had 2 PE sessions. In the morning we had PE with Multiflex, we used our skills that we learnt from last week, changing direction and moving safely into a space so we didn’t get tagged to play a game called Cat and Mouse. We had some super star mice that avoided having their tails caught by the cats! In the afternoon, Mr Whitworth took us outside to build on our skills from Tag Rugby and Cat and Mouse to play Treasure Chest. If we were defending, we had to keep our treasure safe in the middle of the court but if we were attacking, we had to try and get as many cones back to our hoops as we could without getting tagged.

Yesterday we started our first Music lesson for this half term, our focus for the session was to identify the pulse in songs. To start our session, we listened to and joined in with a song called ‘Listen Listen Here I Come’. As we became more familiar with the song, we started to tap our knees in time to the pulse of the song. After really getting to know the song and we could feel the pulse well, we introduced a ‘special drum’ for someone to play who was performing the pulse on their knees particularly well. Our second song was called ‘Cobbler Cobbler’. After getting familiar with this new song and the pulse, we introduced a range of untuned percussion instruments. We all enjoyed exploring the sounds they make. We added these into the song performance. To finish and add a little challenge to our lesson we decided to alter the tempo of the song and discussed what happened to the pulse. We are already excited for next week’s lesson!

In our HeartSmart session we followed last week’s learning by thinking about the characteristics of a good friend. We started by thinking about what we think makes a good friend and followed this by listening to the responses from other children on a video clip. The clip ended with the question: Are you a good friend? Following this question, we wrote done what we think makes a good friend e.g. love, kindness, joy and added them to leaf shapes to begin to build a friendship tree. We will be able to use this tree to remind ourselves and others of what it means to be a good friend to children in our class. Additionally , we have explored the NSPCC ‘Speak out. Stay Safe’ campaign where we discussed who is a ‘trusted’ adult and who we could talk to both in school and out of school if we felt worried or sad. We then shared our happy places which included home, school, Wales, playparks and airports.

In forest school we continued our learning about Hermelin by creating magnifying glasses for our little mouse detective using the properties of willow to twist and bend. Science investigations into the senses involved a sensory walk outside where we identified what we could see, hear, feel, smell and taste. Tasting the fresh air was very popular!

Finally, in other news, we have been delighted to welcome Mrs Millington into Year One . Mrs Millington has worked at Brereton before and now returns to us for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. We hope to introduce her to you over the coming weeks. Sadly ,next week marks Mr Whitworth’s final week in our class. I am sure you would wish to join us in thanking him for his time in our class and we shall miss him. He assures us he will be back once he has completed his next teaching placement in another school. Good luck Mr Whitworth and we shall look forward to hearing from you when you have completed your PGCE year.

Have a lovely weekend everyone
