World Book Day Week Y6 w/b 29.2.22

Date: 5th Mar 2022 @ 12:18pm

As you can imagine, Year 6 enjoy many books in a normal week. At present, we are finding out about The Boy at the Back of the Class, a very topical book as it is about a new child at school who reveals he is a refugee. We are also immersing ourselves in the beautifully illustrated powerful book Rose Blanche as we begin our writing inspired by the pictures. Again, the topics raised in this book are timely as it deals with war and the persecution of the Jews by Nazi Germany.

Somehow, we managed to squeeze even more stories and poems into our week in celebration of World Book Day.

Many thanks to our mystery readers, Mrs Theobalds, Mr Brown and Mrs McDonald, who entertained Year 6 with a variety of styles of book. We also had book characters created out of felt and even potatoes! Many of the children chose to dress as a book character on Thursday with Mr Cotton and Mrs Tice trying to scare the chlldren with their outfits of The Invisible Man and Dracula.

In other areas of our learning this week, Mr McNeil began our exploration of Baghdad and Early Islamic Civilisation. The children looked at how advanced the city was around 900AD with hospitals and universities feeding the thirst for knowledge. Baghdad was home to many medical advances during this time, including paediatrics and vaccines.

To complement this, Science looked into the clinical trials of James Lind who proved that cirus fruits could prevent scurvy. During the 18th century, sailors were more likely to die from the disease than being killed in action due to the lack of fresh fruit and vegetables in their diet.

As we draw nearer to SATS, we are deepening our revision in English and Maths. You can support your child by ensuring they complete their homework, read every day and practise those times tables. We have reminded the children about the power of a good night's sleep too!
