Welcome back Year 5

Date: 3rd Sep 2021 @ 1:36pm

We've had a brilliant two days in Year 5. I've been really impressed with the children's responsible and mature attitude, showing their readiness to learn and take on the challenges of a new school year.

In maths we've been focusing on numbers to 10,000, understanding the value of each of the digits. We've now moved onto rounding 4 digit numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000 which has also involved some quite tricky problem solving. Next week we'll continue with rounding and then move onto understanding the place value of numbers to 100,000.

In English we explored a huge box in the classroom which was addressed to Pennsylvania, and had the labels 'handle with care' and 'this way up'. The children had some fantastic discussions about what could be inside and when we found out it was 'Henry's Freedom Box', this prompted some more very exciting suggestions!

In our history lesson we started our unit by exploring Sustainable Developmenet Goal 10: reduced inequalities, which we linked to the current situation in Afghanistan. The children were then introduced to our topic of 'Slavery' and they thought about what they already know and what they want to find out.

'There's no such thing as bad weather- just the wrong clothes.'

On Monday we have our first Forest School session. Please can children bring wellies/suitable shoes as well as a waterproof coat. An extra jumper is also handy to have as we'll be outside come rain or shine and we know British weather can be rather changeable!

This half term, PE lessons will be on Tuesdays so children can come to school in their PE kits on this day.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend.
