Week beginning 10th January 2017

Date: 14th Jan 2017 @ 8:00pm

A very Happy New Year to you all. We've had a super first week back at school and it's been a pleasure to hear all the children's christmas news.

Year 1 have settled back int school very well and they seem excited about our new topic 'Super heroes'. We launched our topic through our Talk for writing book focus 'Supertato'. There has been great acting of the story using vegetables and thank you to all those children that have created their own super hero vegetables at home.We also had a tricky decision to make -should we free the pea from the jelly? After a conscience alley exercise the majority of children felt pea needed a second chance and anyway surely not all peas are evil? Are they? Later in the week we made speech and thought bubbles for the characters in Supertato and designed warning posters about evil pea!

We also carried out a number of phonics and reading assessments this week in order to aid our planning.

In numeracy we focused on number and place value , finding 1 more and less for two digit numbers as well as 10 more and less. The children were also set their first mymaths homework to reinforce their learning in class and we hope they have enjoyed completing these tasks online.

In science we started to investigate materials and their uses and in history we became detectives determining what a mystery object found in the cupboard could have been. Eventually we thought it may have been a lamp, especialy as we also discovered a picture of a lady carrying a similar lamp in a book. Who could this lady carrying a lamp be? Please bring in your suggestions next week as well as your picture/photo of a personal hero.

In RE we talked about the kingdom of God and considered what our kingdom might look like if we were King or Queen. There were some very thoughtful and caring responses.

Thank you for the replies so far regarding being our mystery reader. We shall return confirmed dates next week.

Finally, can we add how much we have enjoyed teaching your child/ren this week. There has been alot of excitement and a buzz of activity in the classroom. Please do not hesitate to come in to the classroom , preferably after school to say hello if you have time. Any queries or questions, please just ask.
