Reception WB 5th December

Festive Fun!

This week we have had lots of fun, with all of our learning being linked to the festive period. In Literacy we have been clambering into Santa's sleigh and travelling to a different country each day.  We learnt all about their Christmas traditions. Here are some of the facts we've learnt:

  • In Spain three Magic Kings deliver the presents on the 6th January. Unusually, they leave them in the children's shoes!
  • In Germany, St Nicholas Day is celebrated on the 6th December. St Nicholas leaves gifts in the children's  boots, but if they have been had bad they get sticks!
  • In Sweden they have a special celebration called 'St Lucia Day' on the 13th December. The eldest daughter wears a white dress with a red belt and a crown of candles.
  • In Japan many people have KFC for their Christmas dinner! They also put paper fans on their trees as decorations.
  • In Kenya, children go from house to house on Christmas Eve singing Christmas carols. They receive gifts such as pencils, kangas and sunglasses.

Why not see what else you can find out about Christmas around the world? Please also try to share your Christmas traditions on Tapestry.

In Maths we have been dealing with a number of challenges sent by Santa. First, we had to weigh his presents and identify which was heavier and lighter. Then Santa sent us treats for our elves, but he warned us that they could only eat their own body weight in treats, so we had to ensure the scales were balanced correctly. Finally, Santa informed us he could only carry a given weight of presents so we had to decide which presents to take, ensuring we didn't overload the sleigh! We were super at solving all of these problems!

Unfortnuately, we weren't able to update word wallets this week but we will ensure they are done next week ready for Christmas. You will also receive a mini report in your child's reading diary next week, listing celebrations and areas for development. Whilst these will be brief we hope they help you to support your child at home.

Next week is our 'Stay and Make' session on Thursday afternoon. Please let us know if you are able to attend and if you want any ideas or inspiration please do pop in and we will try and help. Friday is Save the Children Christmas jumper day so children are invited to come into school in their own clothes. Friday is also our Christmas dinner day!

Monday 18th is our Christmas Party day. A letter will be sent out next week with more details. On Wednesday 21st we travel to church for our school carol service.  This is always a popular service and will definitely get you in the mood for Christmas! Year 3 will be leading the service and Reception will be performing Little Donkey.

Finally, we would just like to say a big thank you to all parents for lovely comments in your questionnaires. It really is a privilege to care for your children and we love every minute of it!

Have a lovely weekend!
