A Lovely Week…

What a fantastic final week we have had. On Monday we were lucky enough to be visited by the firefighters from Holmes Chapel fire stations. They talked to us about their role and how they help people. Afterwards, we got to see their fire engine and they explained about all about the special equipment they use to help them help others. Whilst they don’t like to be called heroes we definitely think they are! A big thank you to the crew for taking time to come and see us.

We continued with this theme in Literacy, where we used non-fiction books to find out more about firefighters and we wrote some super facts using words and phrases such as ‘Amazingly…’ ‘Interestingly’ and ‘Did you know…’ We also labelled pictures and we used our super phonics knowledge to sound out the words ourselves. Some very impressive work by all!

In Maths we have been learning about time. We have learnt that a clock has two hands, a minute hand and an hour hand. When the minute hand is pointing to twelve we say o’clock. We practised telling the time using o’clock through a variety of games and activities, such as ‘What’s the time Mr Wolf?’ and bingo. We also looked at why we need to tell the time and we order events within our day. Please try to talk to your child about time over half term e.g. ‘We will go to the park at 4 o’clock’ or ‘We will leave in two hours’ time.’

Thank you for completing the homework on real life heroes. The children used their work to complete some lovely self-portraits and it was wonderful to hear the children talk about their heroes with such pride.

Finally, on Friday we finished the half term with our Superhero Day. We learnt about famous superheroes and had a superhero quiz, after which we went into the hall to compose a superhero dance. After break we visited Year 1 where Miss Wellings had set up some lovely activities, including mask making and superhero measuring. After lunch we flew to the hall to find it had been transformed and we had to complete a superhero obstacle course. We did really well! Please see our Gallery items for photos. The children all looked fantastic so a bit thank you for your support with you costumes.

Over half term please try to read regularly and practise reading and writing words containing our new phonics sounds (these have all been added to word wallets). We have also included a list of the first 100 High Frequency Words. When your child is confidently able to read these on sight please try to focus on spelling them. Homework folders also contain reading tips and prompts from Mrs Arthur. Reading at home regularly really does increase progress so please, please, please keep it up! Thank you for your support.

Have a lovely half term!
