Our First Full Week!

The children have all coped really well with their increased hours. It has been lovely to have them in for a little longer and spend more time getting to know them.

This week we started our daily Phonic sessions and we have focussed on the sounds a, s and t. Here at Brereton, we use rhymes to help us remember how to form them:

a – around the apple, down the leaf.

s – slither down the snake.

t – down the tower, across the tower.

We will be working very hard to ensure the children all form their letters correctly and any additional practise you could do at home would be greatly appreciated. Once they are secure with lower case formation then please practise upper case formation.

During Phonics, we also learn to read High Frequency Words (HFWs) by sight. This means we encourage the children to read the word quickly, without sounding it out. This week we have looked at here, the and little. It is important that children also recognise these words when they start a sentence (Here is the… The cat is…).

During the course of this week, we have also begun our Guided Reading sessions. This is where 3-4 children all read the same book together, led by myself. During these sessions, I have particularly skills and words to focus on and I teach the children different reading strategies. The main aim of these sessions at the moment, however, is to develop confidence and for the children to see themselves as a reader. It has been lovely to see the children already pointing to the words as they say them and smiling as they read. We have also been looking closely at new vocabulary in our stories: this week we found the words cosy, clambered, sturdy, kind-hearted. We discussed what they mean and we are going to try and use them in our everyday language.

In Literacy, we have been looking at the story ‘The Three Little Pigs.’ On Thursday, we worked in teams to create homes for these poor little pigs. We had lots of fun trying to blow them down!

In Art we have created some wonderful self-portraits. These will be on display in our classroom until the end of the school year.

This has been a week of firsts: our first assembly, our first PE lesson and our first RE lesson. Thank you for your help with our RE topic, Good News. The children have really enjoyed sharing their good news and we have displayed these in our class book.

If you have any queries or questions, however small, please don’t hesitate to come and speak to us.

Have a wonderful weekend.
