Y5 - w/b 10th May

Date: 13th May 2021 @ 12:22pm

Y5 have been very busy this week

We had a very exciting start to our week when we attended a NASA recruitment session. This included an IQ test, a personality quiz, enduring a fitness test and having their measurements taken by the interview panel. Y5 used this experience to make formal recommendation to NASA on who they should recruit for their mission. We will be furthering this work looking at the text Hidden Figures which is the story of four black women and their contribution towards the successful mission to The Moon.

Hidden Figures

All children are working hard on their spelling and handwriting in school and we have noticed a real improvement.

The space theme continued in science where the children devised their own questions to test each other on their knowledge of the unit. We also did a fun Kahoot quiz which the children really enjoyed. This has concluded our space topic in science and we will be moving onto Life Cycles next week.

We have almost finished our work on 'Who Let The Gods Out', which the children have really enjoyed, and will be moving on to 'The Explorer' by Katherine Rundell for our 'Adventures' topic. It is wonderful for children to have their own copies of the text and I thank you for your continued support with this initiative. It would be useful for children to have their own copies before we return after half term. I have asked the library in Sandbach and Holmes Chapel and they have some available. Please let me know if you are unable to get a copy.

The Explorer

Learning about The Space Race has involved lots of work on the 1950s - 1970s. This week we have started looking at Pop Art and the work of Andy Warhol. The children have enjoyed looking at his use of block colour and having a go themselves.

In maths, we have been looking at multiplying and dividing decimal numbers by 10,100 and 1000. If you have time, you could continue this work at home. Some children found numbers including a 0 tricky. e.g 1.072 x 100. Today we have started our geometry unit on angles which we will continue working on next week.

In forest school we began work on orienteering skills in preparation for our 'Adventures' topic next half term. The children took selfies at each of the locations.

Finally, we will soon be designing and making our own moon buggies (in the final week of half term). I have attached a model containing an equipment list. If you have any of the necessary equipment at home, we would be incredibly grateful if you donate it; sending it in to school before Monday 24th May,

I hope you all have a lovely weekend.
